Defending Against Criminal Charges
Choosing the right legal strategy depends on assessing the charge, evidence, police investigation, witnesses, and surrounding facts.
Lack of Evidence
The prosecution has the burden of proving the criminal charge. Suspicion is not enough. When evidence is weak, incomplete, or unreliable, your attorney can challenge whether the government can prove its case.
Mistaken Identity
Witnesses can make mistakes. Poor lighting, distance, stress, brief encounters, and other factors can affect identification. Video footage, phone information, location records, or other evidence may contradict an accusation.
Illegal Search or Seizure
Police searches and seizures are subject to constitutional limits. When officers obtain evidence through an unlawful search or seizure, a defense attorney may seek to prevent that evidence from being used in court.
False Accusations
Criminal allegations sometimes arise from anger, misunderstandings, relationship disputes, or conflicting versions of an event. Your attorney can investigate the accusation and look for evidence that challenges the accuser’s account.
Lack of Criminal Intent
Some offenses require proof that a person acted knowingly or intentionally. If the prosecution cannot establish the required state of mind, it may be unable to prove every element of the offense.
Self-Defense
A person accused of a violent offense may claim that force was used lawfully to protect themselves or another person. Whether self-defense applies depends heavily on the circumstances surrounding the confrontation.
Problems With Testing or Evidence
Drug and DUI cases may involve chemical testing, field sobriety tests, laboratory analysis, or other technical evidence. Defense counsel can review how evidence was collected, stored, tested, and documented.
Witness Credibility Problems
Witness statements may change over time or conflict with other evidence. A defense attorney can compare statements, examine possible motives or bias, and challenge testimony that does not match the facts.
Types of Criminal Cases We Handle
Steven Titus & Associates, P.C. handles a broad range of criminal matters in Wyoming, from DUI charges to serious felony allegations. We also represent people during pre-charge investigations when possible.
DUI
A DUI charge can lead to serious jail time and threaten your driving privileges and employment status. DUI cases may involve traffic-stop issues, field sobriety testing, breath tests, blood tests, and questions about whether officers had lawful grounds for the stop or arrest. We examine each stage of the investigation and look for weaknesses that may affect the prosecution’s case.
Drug Crimes
Drug crimes can range from allegations of possession to more serious accusations involving distribution or other drug activity. A strong legal defense may involve questions about who possessed the substance, whether police conducted a lawful search, whether the substance was properly tested, or whether prosecutors can prove knowledge and intent.
Theft Crimes
Theft crimes can involve disputes about ownership, intent, identity, or what actually happened to property. A defense attorney can investigate whether prosecutors have evidence showing that the accused intentionally committed the alleged theft rather than relying on assumptions or incomplete information.
Violent Crimes
Conviction for a violent crime carries severe consequences. We defend clients against allegations involving assault, aggravated assault and battery, strangulation, and other violent offenses.
These cases may depend on witness accounts and a firm understanding of the circumstances leading to the alleged incident. Self-defense, conflicting statements, physical evidence, and credibility can all become important.
Sex Crimes
Accusations of sex crimes can threaten a person’s freedom and reputation. A conviction for certain sex crimes may also require mandatory registration as a sex offender, potentially creating long-term consequences for where a person lives, works, and participates in the community.
These cases require careful handling. Our lawyer can review the evidence, witness statements, communications, timelines, and investigative methods used by law enforcement while protecting the client’s legal rights.
White-Collar Crimes
White-collar crimes may involve financial records, electronic communications, business transactions, and large amounts of documentary evidence.
These cases can be very complicated. Careful review of records and the government’s theory can be critical to determining whether prosecutors can establish criminal intent and the other required parts of the charge.
Traffic Offenses
Depending on the allegation, a conviction of a traffic offense can affect your license, insurance costs, employment, and driving record. We can review the stop, citation, available evidence, and possible defenses before helping you decide how to proceed.
Domestic Violence and Protection Order Cases
Domestic violence accusations can result in criminal charges and protection-order proceedings. They can also affect housing, employment, relationships, and firearm rights. Because these cases often involve competing accounts of a private incident, early investigation can be especially important.
Game and Fish and Wildlife Cases
Wyoming’s hunting, fishing, and wildlife laws can lead to serious allegations, particularly in cases involving valuable wildlife or claimed violations of hunting regulations. We represent people facing Game and Fish or wildlife-related cases and examine the evidence surrounding the alleged violation.
Juvenile Crimes
A criminal accusation can have a major effect on a young person’s future. Juvenile cases require careful attention to both the immediate allegations and the long-term consequences. Our Wyoming criminal defense attorney works to protect the juvenile’s rights while helping families understand the legal process.
Pre-Charge Investigations
You do not have to wait until charges are filed to contact an attorney. If you know police are investigating you, early representation can be valuable. An attorney can communicate with investigators, help protect your rights, preserve useful evidence, and prepare for possible charges.
Expungements
A past criminal matter can continue creating problems long after the court case ends. When Wyoming law allows it, an expungement may provide a way to limit the effect of an old criminal record. We can review your circumstances and determine whether seeking an expungement may be an option.

How Can a Criminal Defense Lawyer Help?
A criminal defense lawyer does much more than appear in court. Effective defense work should begin as soon as an attorney learns about an investigation.
- Protect You During an Investigation. If police want to question you, your attorney can advise you about your rights and communicate with investigators. This may prevent you from making statements that prosecutors could later use against you.
- Investigate What Happened. Police reports tell the government’s version of events, but they do not always tell the whole story. A defense investigation may include reviewing videos, photographs, witness accounts, phone records, messages, physical evidence, and other information.
- Review Police Conduct. Law enforcement officers must follow legal rules when conducting stops, searches, seizures, interrogations, and arrests. Your attorney can examine whether those rules were followed and challenge evidence when appropriate.
- Explain the Charges. Criminal statutes can be confusing. Your attorney can explain what prosecutors must prove, what penalties may apply, and how the charge could affect your life.
- Negotiate With Prosecutors. Some cases can be resolved without a trial. Depending on the facts, an attorney may negotiate seeking reduced charges, reduced penalties, or another resolution.
- Prepare for Trial. A good defense must be prepared with the possibility of trial in mind. Our attorney focuses on the evidence, weaknesses in the prosecution’s case, witness credibility, and the legal issues that could matter when a case comes before a judge or jury.
What Should You Do After Being Arrested in Wyoming?
Your actions after an arrest matter. Remain calm and avoid arguing or physically resisting officers. Contact a criminal defense attorney as soon as possible.
You have important constitutional rights. Do not answer any questions from the police unless your attorney is present.
Avoid discussing the facts of your case on social media or with anyone other than your attorney. Messages, posts, photographs, and videos may become evidence.
