Wyoming state law defines theft as taking another person’s property without their permission and with the intent of not returning it. You must also knowingly take someone else’s property, meaning if you accidentally took your coworker’s bag while leaving work, you couldn’t be charged for a simple mistake. However, if you intended to keep any money you found in it, then you could be charged with theft.

There are two main theft crimes in Wyoming: petty theft and grand theft. The main difference between these charges is the amount of money allegedly stolen. Petty theft is charged when the property is worth less than $1,000.00, while grand theft is charged for property worth $1,000.00 or more. Typically, shoplifting from a clothing store can be charged as petty theft. In turn, grand theft would include stealing a car, expensive jewelry, or a new laptop.
