What Is Grand Theft?

Wyoming state law defines theft as taking another person’s property without their permission and with the intent of not returning it. You must also knowingly take someone else’s property, meaning if you accidentally took your coworker’s bag while leaving work, you couldn’t be charged for a simple mistake. However, if you intended to keep any money you found in it, then you could be charged with theft.

There are two main theft crimes in Wyoming: petty theft and grand theft. The main difference between these charges is the amount of money allegedly stolen. Petty theft is charged when the property is worth less than $1,000.00, while grand theft is charged for property worth $1,000.00 or more. Typically, shoplifting from a clothing store can be charged as petty theft. In turn, grand theft would include stealing a car, expensive jewelry, or a new laptop.

How Is Grand Theft Punished?

Unlike petty theft, grand theft is charged as a felony, which can be punished with:

  • Up to 10 years in state prison;
  • A maximum fine of $10,000; and/or
  • Felony probation.

Felony charges can also follow you for years after you complete your sentence. Convicted felons lose certain rights, including:

  • The right to own a firearm
  • The right to vote while incarcerated
  • The right to hold public office or work for the government

Felony convictions can also show up on background checks, meaning employers and housing companies can reject your application. At the end of the day, beating a felony charge is necessary to protect your future.
